Ottawa police tweet on the beat

Sherrilynne Starkie

Ottawa police cops are tweeting on the beat, according to the CBC news website. A new social media strategy was launched earlier this summer which includes Ottawa police Twitter and Facebook accounts. More interestingly, police inspectors are now tweeting on the job. The goal is to reach people in ‘ new’ ways. The initiative makes sense; social media is great for connecting with people and that’s a big part of a policeman’s job.

Are You A Social Media Channel Changer?

SocMed Sean

I admit it…I’m a channel flipper. Combine 300 channels in my cable package, with an extremely short attention span and you have all the ingredients necessary for an evening of click…click…click… Are you changing the channels too quickly when it comes to social media? And my channel changing doesn’t even have a reasonable pattern. 30 seconds of The Daily Show followed by 30 seconds of Storage Wars followed by 30 seconds of CNN, you get the picture.

How to Create the Perfect Facebook Fan Page, 2012 Edition

Techipedia: Tamar Weinberg

This is a guest post by Tim Ware. Although the rollout of Timeline met with a lot of resistance from those used to the previous interface, over time we’ve all realized that it offers much more control over the visual branding of pages than ever before. Public Relations. It’s Still About The People

Waxing UnLyrical

I recently spent the bulk of the day on Facebook / Twitter / Pinterest and the other “usual suspects” marveling at how incredibly much information flows between people around the world by the second. Two separate posts by public relations professionals, though, caught my attention and brought my feet back to earth. The first was an interview in eMarketer Daily newsletter with the eminently wise Brian Solis , in which he emphasized the human side of online communication.

Facebook’s little secret…

Sherrilynne Starkie

It seems a lot of bloggers are reposting some of their blog’s most popular posts from the past as part of their summer editorial strategy. Here’s one I wrote in January 2011 that continues to attract readers. It’s based on how I helped one company start its journey into social media by creating a Facebook secret group. The idea was to restrict this skittish company’s FB presence to the secret group as proof of concept so the management team could get used to the idea

The Strangest Argument I’ve Ever Had On Social Media

Waxing UnLyrical

It all began when Michelle Quillin re-tweeted a recent post of mine. It was about remembering to use the headline and first lines to keep readers compelled to read, old and new. A follower of hers read it, and tweeted in reply, “That made me want to vomit.” I was totally at sea. Michelle asked him why. The points he tweeted back basically amounted to just one: social media cannot be used to sell anything, so why deceive people with tips to help them do that?

Could the Survival of Facebook Depend on Its Privacy?

Facebook stock is not doing very well. Lots of reasons for that, put forward by people much smarterthan I, which you can easily read about via a Google search. Some are even beginning to question whether Mark Zuckerberg can continue as the leader of Facebook (somewhere, the Winklevoss twins are howling with laughter). Clearly, the experiment of Facebook as a publicly traded company isn’t going well, though I think it is still too early to be called a failure.
