Grinches React On Social Media To Melania Trump's Holiday Decorations

This article is more than 3 years old.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, First Lady Melania Trump took on the annual duties of decorating the White House for the Christmas holiday. This came just a week after a massive 18+ foot Fraser fir arrived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in time for the holidays.

While Mrs. Trump has been called out in the past for her choice of decorations, with 2017's all-white adornments compared to the Chronicles of Narnia film franchise, this year it wasn't the decorations but the First Family that were in the crosshairs of holiday Grinches.

Despite repeated calls for unity, even the decorations seemed fair game for President Donald Trump's critics and foes on social media.

From the official @FLOTUS account, the First Lady shared videos of the decorations in the White House, and posted, "During this special time of the year, I am delighted to share “America the Beautiful” and pay tribute to the majesty of our great Nation. Together, we celebrate this land we are all proud to call home. #WHChristmas"

Then the "reactions" began.

@ghgrossman1 responded, "Wow think of all the 260k plus families that won’t be here for Christmas because your husband acted too late, all that money spent could have paid for funerals and food for all the struggling families, kids in cages, wow sad:"

@HorribleNasty responded in a comment befitting the Twitter handle," Well it's better than last year red trees crap but I'm glad she's hosting the last Christmas in the White House. I wonder if she'll stand by Donald while he's in prison or get remarried to another rich old man."

Some users on social media simply thought the time was wrong for such excessiveness, with @jose26_Fleming noting, "That's way too much extravagance & runway modeling during this time of extreme suffering and uncertainty. Be Humble."

At least one non-Grinch offered some positivity. @MontagueJuana responded, "Mrs. Trump, you will always be the First Lady to me , along with Jackie Kennedy. You have brought back grace and dignity back to the White House. I wish you a very Merry Christmas!"

Thankless Efforts

The First Lady also showed class by offering thanks to those volunteers who came out to the White House to lend a hand in the decorating efforts. @FLOTUS posted, "This weekend, volunteers from all across America have come to decorate the @WhiteHouse for the holiday season. Thank you for your time, enthusiasm & devotion to make sure the spirit of peace & joy fill the historic rooms & halls of the People's House! #WHChristmas"

The First Lady offered simple thanks and even denoted that the White House is truly "the People's House," but sure enough there were plenty of Grinch-worthy responses even to those sentiments!

@THATSNOKAY offered a photo of the President in an undated photo with Playboy bunnies, and the commentary "What a lovely family"

Clearly to some the President and First Lady don't deserve respect, but it begs the question what type of reaction such a post would have gotten if it had been posted about former Presidents Bill Clinton or Barrack Obama?

@HagemisterJr also offered the thought, "Did anyone volunteer to help you start packing?"

@brattee1 suggested, "Thank God we have a REAL First Lady coming in January."

And @upstate_dog added, "On Jan. 20, people from all across America will come together to welcome @JoeBiden to the White House for his presidential term. We'll respect his decency, integrity and honesty as he makes sure true patriotism fills the historic rooms & halls of the People's House!"

While such calls are noble and hopeful, it is doubtful that the whole country will come together. Not when even Christmas greetings are mocked with such vial distain on social media. If anyone questions why this divide is so great, maybe the venom of these responses could serve as the answer.

If even a holiday greeting isn't enough to put differences aside there is little hope anything else can heal the nation.
