Facebook Cracks Down On People Selling ... Plots Of Land In The Amazon Rainforest

This article is more than 2 years old.

Facebook would appreciate it if users stopped selling off pieces of the Amazon on its site.

The social network on Friday said it would now prohibit any such listings on the Marketplace section of its site, a Craigslist-like venue that has grown in popularity during the pandemic. The new policy extends to any real estate offered within “ecological conservation areas” across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

“We will now review listings on Facebook Marketplace against an international organization’s authoritative database of protected areas to identify listings that may violate this new policy,” the company said in a blog post. “Protected areas are crucial for conserving habitats and ecosystems and are critical to tackling the global nature crisis.”

According to the BBC, Facebook will use a database compiled by the Unep World Conservation Monitoring Centre, an United Nations-run environmental group.
