Hey ladies… we celebrated Women’s History Month on our #SMTLive Twitter chat on March 26th. It was so fun (not to mention super empowering) to hear from the ladies of SMT on how social media empowers women in business, which women in the field inspire them, and what their companies do to highlight women during the month.
Read on to see the highlights of our fourth annual women in social media Twitter chat.
Making the space
One of the coolest parts about social media is that everyone has an equal platform, man or woman. Our #SMTLive participants agreed: Social media gives women a space in many different fields that they certainly didn’t have before.
A1: It brings more women into areas that are typically male-dominated, sport is a great example as a lot of collegiate & professional teams are led by female-run content departments #SMTLive

A1: Social media has provided opportunities for women to empower each other from around the world through online connections. It's also been huge in spreading awareness about issues women face in the workplace (#MeToo, pay equality, maternity leave, etc.) #SMTlive

No one can talk over you in a debate, and the sheer volume of other women using social media means that there is usually at least one other person who has your back! #SMTLive

#winspo
We asked which women inspire our ladies of #SMTLive - and boy did they answer.
With so many famous and influential women out there on social, it sounds tough to choose just one social media goddess who embodies your personal brand. Whether it’s someone who makes the change you want to see in the world through their social platforms, or the best embodiment of your personal brand - yourself - women inspiration (Is #winspo a thing? It is now, get it trending y'all.) is the best kind of inspiration.
A3. @AOC is our #girlbossgoals. By speaking up for humanity, equality and justice- AOC embodies everything we strive for- making the world a better place for everyone. #SMTLive

@AOC seems tough to beat when it comes to women in the US with influential social media presences.

Words of #wwisdom
#wwisdom = women wisdom? Sorry, I got carried away. But these wise ladies of #SMTLive still have the best wisdom in the game. Here are just a few of the sage pieces of advice for women entering the social media marketing world, from those who’ve been there and done that.
Loving the convo so far! Feel free to ask your own questions. Q4- What advice would you give to a woman entering a career in social media marketing? #SMTLive pic.twitter.com/VDDFrwOgeR

A4: Say "Yes!" to any and every opportunity you're offered. If your boss asks you to be part of something bigger, go all in with everything you've got. #SMTLive pic.twitter.com/RnKMzSIyct
— MyCorporation (@MyCorporation) March 26, 2019
“When you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, 'Certainly I can' Then get busy and find out how to do it” - Teddy Roosevelt, who was not a woman, but was (somehow) still wise.
A4: learn all you can from those who've been successful but don't simply follow the lead, because the game changes quickly #SMTLive
— yella (@daniella__wade) March 26, 2019
A4: Always be learning - and don't stick to one industry. Your knowledge deepens as you work with different sectors. #SMTLive

Celebrate good times (and good gals)
As women in business, it’s important for us to back each other up and cheer each other on - that glass ceiling isn’t going to break itself, after all.
We were so excited to hear the women in our Twitter chat celebrating each other, especially within their own companies.
At @Salliemae, we are highlighting different women leaders on our #SallieMaeTeam on IG, here on Twitter and Linkedin! #SMTLive ????♀️????????????????????????
