There are pros and cons for all of them, but it depends a lot on whether you want to spend any money, want to have your own domain name, what kind of options and functionalities you want and what kind of skills you have in doing the design and maybe programming.

I set up a self-hosted WordPress acccount and bought my own domain name. I started spending more time checking feedburner than writing blog posts. Eventually I gave up, let the domain name expire, and archived my blog at wordpress.com. I did everything right. That’s when my stats obsession began.

For example with PluginID I had huge success with guest blogging as an SEO strategy, and within just 2-3 months I was on the front page of Google for the phrase personal development. Currently I would describe my strategy as “hopefully Google sees the quality and sends me visitors”. – Phil. do very well. Others not so much.
