With all the wonderful feedback on my guest post about how we utilize WordPress multisite and discussion forums to build community for our rather niche market, I thought I might offer some detail about specific tactics and network plugins we use to keep members informed, active and increasing in number. Just because I manage to get 500 visitors a day from an article I submitted to article directories doesn’t mean you can get that much traffic doing the same thing. Submit your blog to directories relevant to your niche, like InsLink.com (an SEO/webmaster directory). What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa.

Directory Submissions By nature, directory links are of a very poor quality. Sometimes I’ll also pay $100 or so to BOTW.org which is a human-filtered directory which can give me some great link juice. As soon as I’m cached in this directory I find my rankings to increase almost instantly.

Attractionhowto.com is a really terrible website and doesn’t even have the six pages I counted unless you include their RSS feed. They’re simply registering on tons of forums and profile websites, placing their link in their bio’s, and then ranking well for their keyphrase. The market is insanely huge.

The reason development was so cheap is because the plugin is actually a very simple concept, and just pulls in content from customised RSS feeds that other services (like Google Blogsearch) are producing.
