The Buzz around NFL Training Camps

The opening of NFL Training Camps is one of my favorite times of the year. Every fan is geeked out to see their favorite team strap on their gear and get ready for the start of the NFL season. In the past, buzz for teams was relegated to the local area and screaming fans showing up to watch their team practice at a remote outpost. The integration of social media has given this buzz a new life, but what team’s fans are the most passionate?

I figured that the Steelers would rank first overall in conversation share  given the passion and volume of their fan base and off-field troubles of pending quarterback of quarterback Ben Rothlisberger,.   I assumed the Cincinnati Bengals would come in second in buzz with the newly minted combo of TO and social media darling Chad Ochocinco edging out popular Super Bowl pick Baltimore for the number two slot while the hapless Browns  rounding out the field. To check the validity of my assumptions, I set up targeted searches using a social media monitoring software (disclosure, UberVu gave me an evaluation account of their software).

The previously mentioned wide receiver combo in Cincinnati dominated the social conversation and helped drive the Bengals to a league-leading 45 percent of the overall conversation. The Ravens came in second with a 23 percent share. Perhaps the most shocking was the minuscule 11 percent share grabbed by the rabid Steeler Nation, which was easily dwarfed by Cleveland who nearly took the second slot with 22 percent.

These numbers speak to the oval buzz surrounding of the teams, however it doesn’t go into what the fans were chatting about as camps opened their gates. Below is a team-by-team breakdown of the mentions, buzz words and overall sentiment of these four teams.

Cincinnati Bengals

For the Bengals, the buzz was mostly positive with Owens and Ochocinco dominating the mentions for the team. Owens name was mentioned nearly as much as the team’s name and the largest spike in mentions was the day that the receiver inked a deal with the club. Some negative mentions included oft-troubled running back Cedric Benson and the Baltimore Ravens, a main rival to the Bengals.

Baltimore Ravens

Despite coming in second in the overall buzz category, the Ravens did not do so well in terms of overall sentiment with the needle leaning towards the negative end. Much of the doom and gloom was surrounding the news that safety Ed Reed will miss the first six weeks of the season recovering from hip surgery and the off-field injury to prized rookie linebacker Sergio Kindle.

Cleveland Browns

Browns fans have not had much to cheer about in recent years so it kind of surprised me to see that Mike Holmgren was the most mentioned name in a positive light and helped push the sentiment in Cleveland to a tick over the median to the positive side. It was also kind of interesting to see that Eric Mangini’s name was mentioned just as much as Holmgren’s albeit much more negative.

Pittsburg Steelers

The fans of Pittsburgh really shocked me in this overall research. Throughout the season, you’ll see these guys waving the Terrible Towels in stadiums across the country, but they weren’t close to their division foes in terms of social buzz. Despite the low numbers, the Steelers generated the highest overall sentiment. Perhaps the most shocking thing about this was seeing Ben Rothlisberger’s name in a positive light while the NHL’s Winter Classic (hosted at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field this year) was in the negative column.  Both I would normally put in the converse columns.

I LOVE this, Jeffro. Your analysis of WHY buzz was what it was seems spot-on to me.

As a devout Ravens fan, I think the conversation has leaned negative because we are nit-picking. The overall projection of the team is a deep playoff run…or better. The expectations are high, so perhaps the fanbase is discussing the things that could prevent that from happening?

Do you think everyone is just sick and tired of Ben Roethlisberger to the point where nobody wants to even talk about him?

Mike, glad you approve. I think the Brownies were the most interesting in the hate/love for Holmgren and Mangini. I think Big Ben is an after thought now. The buzz will really pick up opening day and week 6 when he returns from suspension. It will also be interesting to see if there are more allegations.
