Last year, my colleague Tom Pick (@TomPick) and I introduced the #Nifty50 awards, which honored 50 men and 50 women who were leading the way in social media through their active engagement on Twitter. This year, we’ve narrowed the criteria a bit to focus specifically on individuals who work for technology companies, and asked our readers to nominate the men and women they thought were most deserving of the award.

In order to qualify this year, each #Nifty50 nominee had to work for a technology company such as software, hardware, IT services or telecom. Nominees working for tech-focused venture capital, advisory and analyst firms were also allowed. The size of the company or the number of people it employed did not matter.

Especially important to us was putting emphasis on social executives, members of the C-Suite active in social media who are working to create a culture of transparency and authenticity in their companies. For that reason, all nominees had to be employed at the director level or above in their respective companies. None of these executives had to be “techies,” so to speak, but they did have to work for technology companies.

A week ago, Tom announced the 2012 #Nifty50 Women on his Webbiquity blog, and now I am pleased to announce the winning 2012 #Nifty50 Men. Each of these men has performed outstanding work promoting social business practices in the past few years, and all have emerged as powerful thought leaders as the tech world learns to adapt to the demands of the digital bazaar. The #Nifty50 Men are remarkable not only for their leadership, but for the passion they bring to everything they do, energizing customers, employees and other influential members of their community.

This year, we also decided that honoring the tech sector’s greatest social media advocates on our respective blogs isn’t enough. If there’s one thing this year’s winners have taught us, it’s that one of the most important aspects of being a leader in social business is giving back to the communities that make this work possible in the first place.

With this in mind, we are proud to introduce the#Nifty50 Kids project, which aims to bring cutting-edge technology to underprivileged kids throughout the country in order to help better prepare them to become our business leaders of the future. Several renowned organizations have expressed interest in sponsoring this cause, and we are confident that with their help we will be able to make this dream a reality in the coming year.

It is our hope that one of our award recipients will champion the 2013 #Nifty50 Kids cause. Doing good deeds in the community is not only the right thing to do, but in the age of social branding it also makes good business sense. Brands willing to engage with and give back to their communities will see these efforts rewarded with increased sales, market share and—most important of all—improved brand loyalty.

The future of profit is purpose.

By Simon Mainwaring, Founder of We FirstAward Recipient 2011 Top #Nifty50 Men

The concept of a brand’s “purpose” extends in many different directions, but it begins with strong leadership in the C-Suite. The social executive has a responsibility to clearly define a brand’s vision and the best practices for making that vision a reality. By engaging their employees with a clearly defined social agenda, these innovative leaders will help develop a culture of engaged, enthusiastic employees who will then become effective brand ambassadors as the world marches forward into the age of social business.

Coming next year, Tom and I will be honoring #Nifty50 Women and Men Writers, to include bloggers, journalists, authors and PR professionals. Just like this year, we will be asking our community to nominate their favorite leaders in this field.

So, without further ado, here are the 2012 #Nifty50 Men, each of whom has represented the technology world on Twitter with class, dedication and integrity. It’s been a great year for social business, thanks in large part to the engagement and leadership these 50 men have provided. Once you’ve taken a look at these Twitter innovators below, don’t forget to check out the 2012 #Nifty50 Women at Webbiquity too!
