Instead, I suggested that I blog about key learnings from the conference which I felt would benefit my readers and community. I was given free registration for the conference, though I paid all travel expenses out of pocket – quite a hit on my credit card. Again, this was their choice to make and I completely respect that.

We only knew of each other through Twitter and yet, when he tweeted that he’d be in the area attending a conference, I jumped at the chance to meet him. At the agreed-upon time, I pulled up to meet him at the conference. I had been reading his tweets (posted messages) for a short while, but he knew nothing at all about me.

You don’t want a recommendation from someone you met at a conference who thought you were really nice, only to find yourself unable to back it up when asked about it by a potential customer or employer. Only ask those who have real first-hand experience with whatever it is that you do.

Suggested language you might want to consider including in the invitation: Wonderful to meet you at the marketing conference last week. It is considerate to remind the other person how you know one another and why you would like to connect with them, as opposed to connecting with someone to increase the size of your network.
