You can also sort and analyze your own followers to get a better understanding of the potential contact points you already have, or take a look at competing brands.

Since I’ve been comparing major news sites in variety of areas ( Facebook and Twitter impact; YouTube and new Digg activity; site speed and domain authority , among others) I thought I’d look at overall social media engagement too. But it is possible to make some basic comparisons using data from some of the free tools that are available.

Google, Bing and Yahoo are all experimenting with various forms of real-time results now and making deals with Twitter, Facebook and other social sites. It should be noted that there many forms of real-time search, including Twitter Search itself and sites like OneRiot , Collecta and Topsy , among others.

Like The Huffington Post there are also competing Facebook buttons at work. The Like button does appear on their article template: But at least on my computer it was a little slow to load, and once loaded it added some extra white space before the start of the editorial text. Dana DiTomaso – I liked her ideas and her creativity, and she has lots of good ways for smaller brands to compete against the big ones in local SEO. I also like how she called out Wil for something he’d said about how people use Twitter that she didn’t like. Allison Urban – I enjoyed Allison’s UX tips.
