Twitter Wednesday rolled out a button for websites that will allow visitors to send private messages to the individuals or companies behind those sites.

The social network announced in a tweet that the new Message button is now available here for use on all websites:

The addition of the Message button for websites is likely aimed at encouraging Twitter users to send direct messages to businesses, rather than tweeting businesses or sending tweets with businesses’ Twitter handles included.

Twitter said in the Twitter Publish entry for the new button:

Direct messages are the private side of Twitter, and the message button makes it easy to start a private conversation with you.
