November Social Trends

Social media continues to change and grow – and with those changes comes new updates and trends. We’re breaking down the top three November social trends to get you up to speed on what you may have missed.

Instagram Tests Hiding Likes in the Globally

It’s been talked about for a while and early tests were rolled out in multiple countries including Australia, Brazil and Canada before Instagram started testing hidden like counts in the United States. Midway through the month, the popular social platform announced it expanded the test globally.  Those in the test would no longer be able to see the like counts on other posts but could still see how many like their own. It’s unclear what impact this could have on brands, but users appear to have mixed reviews.

New FTC Requirements for Influencers that Impact Brand Marketers

The FTC released a new disclosures guide for influencers and the changes could impact your influencer marketing programs.  Among the new changes, disclosures must now be in close proximity to the product and be clear about the relationship. Written disclosures are only okay if the product was the only thing the influencer received. Additionally, influencers must now disclose even when they were not asked to post.  Check out our blog for an in-depth look at the new FTC requirements.

Holiday Shopping Habits: Millennials vs. Gen Z

We’re gearing up for the holiday season and if knowing what the younger generations are looking for is important for your brand, then you’ll want to stay on top of their holiday shopping habits. A new report on holiday habits has collected some pretty insightful data. Did you know 48% of Gen Z and millennials are most influenced by friends or family when making holiday purchases? And only 18% are actually influenced by online ads. Gen Z and millennials are six times more likely to be influenced by influencers than celebrities when coming up with gift ideas. And how’s your YouTube channel? YouTube is the #2 social media gift inspiration spot for Gen Z gift givers. More than 50% of millennials plan to spend more than $200 on gifts, where Gen Z shoppers will spend between $50 and $200 – so the buying power is there, and you’ll want to keep these tips in mind to reach these generations.
