My theory is that our ranks include a lot of former journalists who wouldn’t be caught dead using a word that’s clearly opinion, such as “best,&# but they’re willing to let these two adjectival phrases and a host of others that are more vague in terms of their promotional impact. And am surprised every time I see it.
