I recently posted my Brief List of 53 Twitter Rules , guidelines for how I choose to use Twitter. I got a great response, and one person commented they liked Twitter “because there weren’t rules.&# Some of these are legislated, and some of them simply come from community values. .&# But there are penalties.

Sure you’re ticked off about Facebook’s abuses of consumer privacy, but does closing your account accomplish anything? It’s hip and cool to say Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging have replaced e-mail, and “anything worth saying can be said in 140 characters,” but it isn’t true. Running a business is a complex affair requiring complex communications. Had I sent it to her via Twitter, it would have required 60 separate messages.

Several clients have told me recently they don’t think their Facebook pages have as many fans as their brand seems to warrant. One executive compared the “coolness” of his brand to a larger, boring brand that drew many more fans to its Facebook page, adding, “I don’t get it.”. Why do you have a Facebook Fan Page?

Simply because adding a new contact on Facebook is called “adding a friend,” does not mean we are truly gaining a friend when we do so.

One response in particular was so provocative there wasn’t enough room to respond on Facebook, so I am responding here. Not true on twitter. If you do, we can be friends.
