While community is a hot buzz word these days, it’s still quite a ways before most businesses truly embrace the idea. Companies like Starbucks , Dell , even my previous employer Microsoft Advertising , all do community incredibly well and it has paid off for all of them many times over.

For the past few months I’ve had the luxury of watching a new local business not only use social networking and community building to build buzz for their business, but integrate it so much so, that it is an integral part of their day to day routine. Their Facebook and Twitter pages are a flurry of activity.

Get Serious About Twitter – Many people just stick with Facebook and never think Twitter is worth their time. Outside the obvious that it’s a community directly tied to job opportunities, there are thousands of great communities with vibrant discussions. I’ve been wanting to write more about these services, but not until I was able to really give them a good try and for the past few weeks, I’ve immersed myself into really 3 choices, Facebook Places , Foursquare and Whrrl. It’s the only one of the three that truly has a community feel to it. So why I’m I on board the Whrrl train?

Be Everywhere The first step that any business needs to take is establishing themselves as a company that embraces community. It’s not enough to just have a Facebook page or Twitter account.
