While community is a hot buzz word these days, it’s still quite a ways before most businesses truly embrace the idea. Companies like Starbucks , Dell , even my previous employer Microsoft Advertising , all do community incredibly well and it has paid off for all of them many times over.

Here is what you can learn from the company to achieve a more engaging and growing community. You want your community to grow bigger and you want people to recommend it to their friends. It’s in peoples’ nature to be part of communities – so let them be a part. Among other things, you can go to the “Style Guide” or “H&M TV”.

Some refer to this phenomenon as fluid identity. The notion of tribe remains as the ideal goal of stakeholder community engineering. What we see here is the situational or contextual character of identity and group belonging (we slip in and out of our various identities and corresponding groups depending on the situation at hand).

Demand, or the creation of it, can be broken down into three distinct, yet dependent parts: Demand Generation Commonly referred to as Awareness, encompasses traditional media such as Television, Radio, Print, Billboards, and so on. During this phase customers seek out what is commonly referred to as word-of-mouth. This is my view.

Now of course I’m not referring to the Ashton Kutchers of the world, but the common users with marketing or community backgrounds, specifically mid range users with 10k plus followers. Community, marketing, video production, are some examples of professional connections. Not the ones with 100’s of thousands of followers.
