It can be done by redirecting the sponsored links to an intermediate page that is blocked via robots.txt, or by applying the nofollow attribute to the JavaScript links (see the Vanessa Fox writeup as well as the second half of this article in SEL for more detail). Li comes down a bit hard on PR agencies; true, most of them are ham-handed when it comes to social media, mass-blasting out press releases to bloggers (Li offers an excellent guide to conducting blogger outreach the right way in chapter 11) and generally treating social media like a broadcast channel. Avoid posting links on random or affiliated websites rather nofollow the link or remove them. Some of the other common sources of spammy links are Forum Profiles, Blog comments, Social bookmarks and paid links. Commenting on some random blog post or forum just to create links is not an advisable practice.
