To get a better sense of the situation I pulled StumbleUpon referral figures from 2010-2012 for a group of 47 news and content sites that we work with at Define Media Group , primarily magazine brands. Participation, budgets and timing varies greatly for the sites in this group and I am not able to segment that in the reported data.

Instead I’ll focus on some basic signals of user activity and engagement: the number of 1+’s, shares and comments on each page. Submitting the profile ID for a particular Google+ page generates an overview chart like this: I collected the +1, share and comment figures for a selection of 45 news organizations. ” I wanted to get a better idea of just how much of a shift has occurred with some of the publishers that we work with at Define Media Group. To anonymize the data I combined each site’s figures into a total number for the group. Among the surveyed group, Reddit went from a combined total of 6.3 million 2011.

Some news sites are supplementing content links with direct questions and comments to users, but this does not appear to be happening in any significant volume. To judge user engagement and activity, I also calculated the average number of “likes” and comments that the last 10 updates/links to each page received. NPR 489,413 513.5

Today Kim Wilson and I are leading a social media workshop for a group of local TV and radio stations. It is a good way to foster a connection with users/viewers and to encourage repins, likes, comments, etc. While Pinterest is a natural fit for lifestyle publishers there are good opportunities for broadcast media too.

I started with the group I used in my news sites domain authority post and added a few more. UPDATE: After Mike’s comment below I added Yahoo! News moved it to the top of the group for articles and knocked Guardian.co.uk The sites include a mix of major newspapers, news magazines and TV news sites. UPDATE: Adding Yahoo!
