And blog commenting is still one of the easiest ways to get backlinks. . Mistake #1: Commentators seek out dofollow blogs only.

Offer email subscriptions with feedburner (your industry probably doesn’t know much about RSS). Heck, build affiliate sites, blogs, forums. How do I monetize a forum, other than using Adsense? Adsense, by nature, is generally pretty poor on forums. Some suggestions for your site: Make your logo clickable.

I realised very quickly that monitoring my Feedburner count was stressful because a) it jumps around too much and thus isn’t even accurate and b) it’s irrelevant for non-techie blogs. So I decided a year ago to never log back into feedburner and don’t care what it says my subscriber numbers are. Use it or lose it!

It’s public, and you can comment. To my knowledge, TechCrunch became the first ever blog to reach 1 million subscribers – something they proudly displayed via their Feedburner chicklet. That’s more comments than I’ve had on this blog in two years of running it. The numbers are pretty deceiving though.
