If you are truly engendering passion with your followers they will answer by commenting, posting, sharing and… buying (or donating). Recently, I had lunch with my friend Jim Farley. Jim is the visionary behind America’s best All News radio station – WTOP. Thomas Aquinas. It’s off the charts for those of us in social media. So, courtesy of St. Unlikely. So be it. | SMTHREE FEBRUARY 14, 2011 Social Media Marketing by the numbers If they are only engaged with Facebook for a quarter-hour a day what chance do we have to get their attention after they read and comment on their real friends’ status updates and view their video links. If you want to inspire confidence, give plenty of statistics. It does not matter that they should be accurate, or even intelligible, as long as there is enough of them. Statistics! | | | | | | | SMTHREE NOVEMBER 15, 2011 Why do we use Social Media? mere 5% are looking for comments by celebrities, athletes or politicians. The people who are really looking for those comments are journalists and foes. In case you missed it, Pew Research just cam out with a pretty impressive study on our Social Media habits. More specifically, this study is less about how we use social Media and more about why we use it. You can see the complete study here but some of the highlights have a bearing on how you approach your Social Media marketing: Two-thirds of Americans on-line are involved with at Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or MySpace. It seems everyone is using contests and promotions as a way to attract followers and fans. Giving people a reason to ‘like’ you – besides your charming brand personality – can be an effective tool for adding to your customer or donor base. Your thoughts? | SMTHREE JANUARY 18, 2011 How often should you post on your Facebook business page? Watch how often they comment and share what you post. This does seem to be one of the raging questions in the social media world. Leaving aside, for the moment, of post quality – what is the optimum number of daily posts for a Facebook business page? Before you answer – keep in mind that once most of your fans have liked you they rarely come back to your page for a visit. | SMTHREE MAY 23, 2012 The Social Network If you are providing content that elicits any sort of emotional response – like, share, comment – from your fans you are tapping into their “preferred” network. The folks at Pew Internet have provided us with this reminder. While the data may almost three months old, even the change-at-the- speed-of-light nature of the Internet can’t devalue these numbers. | | | | | | | | | -
SMTHREE | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2012 How long does a Facebook post last? Generate interaction - the more your fans comment, like or share a post the more people will see it. Yes, this is a “duh” comment. The eternal question in Social Media Marketing is – when is too much not enough? OK, that’s not really the question. The issue brands face is when and how often they should post content on their Facebook pages. The easy answer is – no one really knows. The process contains a lot of trial and error and experimentation. However, a new study may point you in a direction…which is better than having no direction at all. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2011 The Social Media Complaint Department However, you can only create support if you consistently respond to any comments made about you. Take a number, our customer service representative will be with you shortly… My friend Doug Erickson, who writes an excellent blog here , recently forwarded me an interesting article titled: A Better Way To Handle Publicly Tweeted Complaints. The gist is that in the age of Social Media consumers have the ability to flame your business in near real-time. And, their complaints reach a wider audience than ever before. This does not just apply to Twitter. Everyone makes mistakes. Thoughts? MORE >> -
SMTHREE | WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2012 Social Media is a team sport It will spark more comments, shares and re-tweets. I have been fortunate to work with a variety of companies/non-profits at the beginning of their Social Media journey. They have recognized the importance of Social Media in their overall marketing strategy while realizing that it is only a part of the plan. Too many companies (and gurus, mavens, ninjas, etc) see Social Media as the lead dog on the marketing sled. It is not. But I digress. One of the challenges facing any company as they begin their Social Media journey is – content. Great content is all about your audience. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2011 Social media and your customers Facebook makes it easy by emailing you an alert every time someone posts or comments. There is a thread threatening to take over the Starbucks Facebook page. self-admitted loyal Starbucks customer wrote a very long, rambling letter complaining about homophobic behavior she witnessed among Starbucks employees. won’t go into the detail, you can read the “open letter blog here. know, in the blogosphere there is no way to know who is writing truth and who is scamming. am not accusing the above writer of being untruthful. Starbucks should be making the same assumption. SMThree. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2011 Foursquare – What’s the point for your business? Referencing my above comment about becoming a Starbucks mayor – you know what my reward was? Over four million people are registered with Foursquare. How many actually use the service on a daily basis is significantly lower. Comparing that with the over 600 million on Facebook and almost 200 million on Twitter, Foursquare has quite a bit of ground to cover before they become an ‘it’ social network. Will they get there? Based on what they offer the great ego of social media the answer is – no. And, what did I reap from all this effort? Badges. It has us at hello. MORE >> -
