Michael Dell spoke about the issue of proximity in an article in Forbes back in 2006: The first step was to add blogs and message boards in the hope that irate customers will talk to the company rather than gripe to the whole Internet. We may get to use Facebook for free, but our competitors can buy ads against our conversations.

A friend recently asked me about a domain name he was thinking of buying. If a domain name has 30,000 links from one message board (a footer link?), If you end up buying the domain name will other site owners linking to that domain name remove the links to you? Look to see if the domain name is still in Google.

And these are the kind of people who aren’t trolling comment threads and message boards like the rest of us. Instead of promoting my entire blog, I picked a popular article on my site titled, “I Get Paid to Buy Beer,” bought the domain iGetFreeBeer.com , and permanently redirected the domain to the article hosted on my blog.

I got hooked on the Star Tribune Twolves message board in 2002 and haven’t looked back. Although I don’t post very much at all these days, I still read the threads on Twolvescentral.com (Star Tribune kind of killed the boards) on my iPhone every day. link] Jan_B @jaybaer is on a roll this week!

The best also monitor message boards and forums, easy to overlook but critical particularly for niche b2b products and services. Global monitoring capability adds cost and complexity to a tool, so don’t buy it if you don’t need it, but for multinational businesses, this is essential functionality.

Same with the message board trolls, who are all too easy to overlook in favor of bloggers and Twitterers. Maybe it has to do with the size of the item or big ticket item (cost). Some just buy. Buy royalty-free images: You can also simply buy royalty-free images and not have to worry about copyright. Typically it’s a very difficult thing to do and will be very expensive. How could that be?
