World Cup Day One Draws More Than 58 Million Facebook Users

Facebook interactions for World CupDuring the first day of the 2014 World Cup, over 58 million Facebook users accounted for more than 140 million interactions on the social network.

AllFacebook reported the “top five social moments” from Thursday:

  • Neymar scores Brazil’s first goal to tie the match
  • Neymar gives Brazil a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick following a controversial foul call
  • the final whistle
  • Oscar scores in extra time to give Brazil a 3-1 lead
  • An own goal by Marcelo gives Croatia an early 1-0 lead

Who was responsible for most of these social interactions? World Cup interactions on Facebook were dominated by males in the 18-24 age group, followed by men 25-34.  Women ages 18-24 came in third, followed by women 25-34.  An older male demographic (men 35-44) rounded out the top five demographic groups participating in World Cup action on the social network.
