News sites have a big advantage over other companies on Facebook because they regularly produce breaking news and other forms of quality content that can be featured on their pages and placed in user news feeds. So perhaps they have less of a need to add extra bells and whistles.

Lauren: As of now, the content from the sites is automatically submitted using a feed from our front page. Since the new Digg prioritizes a more personal connection to what you’re digging, we think that users will enjoy seeing local news in their “My News&# feed. But how have users responded so far?

A limited number of listings will appear at the bottom of the main search result pages, or users can drill down to see more extensive listings: Currently a social circle is determined by the social media accounts linked from a user’s Google Profile , the feeds they subscribe to in Google Reader and their Google chat and Gmail contacts.

For news sites, the publication date and a photo can be added to Yahoo search results for articles and opinion pieces, as shown in this example: To take advantage of the enhanced news results, publishers can either use RDFa markup to embed the news data in their content, or use a NewsML feed to send the data privately to Yahoo.

Some marketers have felt that the guidelines are too limiting or controlling, but among other things Facebook is trying to prevent significant manipulation of the news feed. Of course everyone tries to facilitate engagement on their Facebook Pages and increase exposure in users’ news feeds; that’s a basic component of Facebook marketing.

Releases are posted on their press release page (and in its RSS feed) and tweeted via @muckrack , which currently has 5k+ followers. Based on their press release page and RSS feed, since the service launched in late July they’ve distributed 51 press releases, a small number being their own.
