I differ slightly with Bruce Tempkin, though, on how to gather that data. Directories… Scroll to Top While it's certainly important for any analysis of customer data to be actionable, and timeliness and context are important, I believe we need to get there through solid statistical methods. It is solely my opinion.

How to build community on membership sites. Include member and blog directories: Provide searchable directories of all users and blogs. Edit directory pages to include descriptions and avatars of featured blogs and site administrators. Include links to your forums and directories or featured blogs.

There were no search engines and directories were fairly small and specialized. We’ll put the odd blog in our blogroll, if we even have one. But how many of those are owned by us as well? No, our focus is all on how we can get links back to our own site and build ourselves up in the eyes of Google.
