Nofollow links to sites with which you don’t want/need to share link equity. Most bloggers want their articles to rank on Google, as well as their home page (especially when searching for their name), but probably don’t need “About Me” or “Contact Me” to rank. This site is deep, not flat.

The top results for most keyphrases are either a Wikipedia page, a site that is very focused around community, or a clear leader in an industry. There are exceptions, but links tend to go to social sites (even Wikipedia has social aspects) by the people who use them. These days however, things are very different.

So a link from a high authority site like The New York Times will be more powerful than a link from a low authority site, for example, a new site with no inbound links of its own. Please take a look at the example below. Nofollow links also matter. The nofollow attribute gives search engines instructions not to follow the link.

As someone who does public relations for companies, I’m sure you carefully pick your bloggers for the pitch. Bloggers have to weed out the crap and PR pros need to find the right people for the job. The job of someone who does blogger outreach can be difficult. We both have difficult jobs. That’s just fine.

Health, gambling, forex and gaming industries for example, are very competitive online. The phrases in the example above are considered to be long-tail phrases as they contain more words and have a much smaller search volume, but they’re also easier to rank for. If they have too many friends and not many followers, for example, you might not want to follow them. You might choose to only follow active users (who tweet between 1 and 100 times a month, for example) and not users who are either way too inactive or are too excessive. Moreover, you can also nofollow people based on their tweets.
