In looking at syndicated content on Yahoo News, most of the syndicated articles do not include attribution links (each news source likely has to request or provide them), but among those that do exist there is a problem. Will Publishers Add Cross-Domain Rel=Canonical to Syndication Deals?

However from an SEO perspective there is a downside, as syndication creates duplicate content issues. Search engines don’t want to show users multiple versions of the same content, so when an article has been syndicated it’s likely that one version will be given prominence – and that may or may not be the original.

RSS feeds are another good opportunity, both for content discovery and because users sometimes utilize them to power link modules on a blog or other site, in which case they become a direct source of links. Smart syndication. Shine or MSN Living. So it is a vehicle for link development too. Blogger and influencer outreach.

Syndicated content – publishing a large amount of syndicated content has been problematic for some brands, particularly when that content appears on quite a few other sites. It is important that non-original content remains a small percentage of the indexable pages on the site.

It sounds a lot like the practices of some industry blogs and news aggregators today. We poached material constantly, from newspapers, from other publications — even from Time. Copying from Time was a fact-checker’s dream, because we knew they took accuracy very seriously over there.
