July 1st is just about here, so if you haven’t already, now is the time to choose your alternative RSS reader of choice to replace Google Reader. Since I last wrote about Google Reader alternatives, more services have sprung up to fill the voie. Allows you to save posts (similar to starring in Google Reader).

In looking at syndicated content on Yahoo News, most of the syndicated articles do not include attribution links (each news source likely has to request or provide them), but among those that do exist there is a problem. Will Publishers Add Cross-Domain Rel=Canonical to Syndication Deals?

However from an SEO perspective there is a downside, as syndication creates duplicate content issues. Search engines don’t want to show users multiple versions of the same content, so when an article has been syndicated it’s likely that one version will be given prominence – and that may or may not be the original.

Google has announced it will make a number of changes to Google Reader ‘in the next week’, and by the looks of it, they’re going to break a great existing product and tool which is used by a lot of professionals to be able to shoehorn some extra interaction into Google+.

RSS feeds are another good opportunity, both for content discovery and because users sometimes utilize them to power link modules on a blog or other site, in which case they become a direct source of links. So maintain a decent selection of feeds and don’t let the impending shutdown of Google Reader move you away from RSS.

It sounds a lot like the practices of some industry blogs and news aggregators today. Shifting from poaching content to paying for it, it really is no wonder that the AP seems so threatened by Google. We poached material constantly, from newspapers, from other publications — even from Time.
