It used to be taboo to promote your own blog articles on Digg but, since June 2010 when the social bookmarking site was improved, this is no longer frowned upon. Presuming you have an RSS feed for your blog, you merely have to log into your Digg account and follow the prompts to verify to Digg you are the owner of your blog.

After 20 minutes of scratching my head and several automated email messages telling me I was unsuccessfully claiming my blog with Technorati (one of the larger blog registries out there), I learned the secret. All I needed to do was create a blog post, just like this one, and insert 4BGUG24BGFTP somewhere inside.

To be fair, I haven’t stayed off the sites completely as I’d been working for a nonprofit agency and created accounts on both social networking sites. I’ve tweeted and facebooked under the agency’s name, but in my mind my sabbatical has remained true for I haven’t updated my own feeds.

That’s the same date I blogged my social networking primer for 2014. I believed that following equaled sociability when it’s easier (for me) to be social with people when I’m not following them.
