This is a sign outside a car wash in Reston, Virginia. Nothing unusual about it. Businesses do these kinds of promotions all the time. However, I took this picture on January 28th! I’ll admit that I am not the most timely person when it comes to taking down my holiday decorations. They claim to specialize in automobile detailing. Make it fun. | SMTHREE DECEMBER 21, 2010 Why your Social Media content stinks I just read a great blog: Why your social media initiatives will fail in 2011 by Adam Kmiec. It got me to thinking (very dangerous) about the root of what drives social media – content – and why so much of it stinks. So, I came up with a few reasons why: 1) Content Strategy. You don’t leave on a trip without first checking Mapquest. Think about who you are. Your thoughts? | | | | | | | SMTHREE JANUARY 18, 2011 How often should you post on your Facebook business page? As we delve into answering the above question I refer you to a recent blog post from Dan Zarrella. am a huge fan of Dan’s writings and this one not only piqued my interest – it inspired this blog post. This does seem to be one of the raging questions in the social media world. Generally, they interact with you via the postings in their news feed. Uh, not so fast. Truncated though they may be, anyone that reads your post or your tweet (or this blog) reads it alone. Don’t take my word for it. | SMTHREE DECEMBER 1, 2011 The Social Media Complaint Department Take a number, our customer service representative will be with you shortly… My friend Doug Erickson, who writes an excellent blog here , recently forwarded me an interesting article titled: A Better Way To Handle Publicly Tweeted Complaints. The gist is that in the age of Social Media consumers have the ability to flame your business in near real-time. And, their complaints reach a wider audience than ever before. This does not just apply to Twitter. You can find “bad” reviews on Facebook, Yelp, Google Places and literally hundreds of other websites. Thoughts? I have been fortunate to work with a variety of companies/non-profits at the beginning of their Social Media journey. It is not. But I digress. There is no secret sauce here. | | | | | | | | | -
SMTHREE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2011 Social Media Will Make You Rich I recently received a direct message on Twitter from a new follower that promised if I clicked on his bit.ly link that my business would explode with social media. Explode ? Really? pose this question to you – has your, or your client’s, business exploded because of social media? Have any of the big, major, plenty-of-cash-to-spend brands seen explosive business growth as a result of their social media? Oh, check out Pepsi to answer that question.). As recently as a year ago social media was on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Today it is being shoved down our throat. Probably. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2011 Social media and your customers won’t go into the detail, you can read the “open letter blog here. There is a thread threatening to take over the Starbucks Facebook page. self-admitted loyal Starbucks customer wrote a very long, rambling letter complaining about homophobic behavior she witnessed among Starbucks employees. know, in the blogosphere there is no way to know who is writing truth and who is scamming. am not accusing the above writer of being untruthful. am assuming that within the confines of their diatribe there are nuggets of truth. Starbucks should be making the same assumption. SMThree. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2012 Social Media Bullshit I have not posted for a while because, well, because I just didn’t feel like writing another blog about some meaningful event that was transpiring in the Social Media “verse” I decided to spend more time reading that writing and came to the conclusion that when it comes to Social Media – there’s a lot of bullshit out there. First, let me state that I do believe that Social Media is useful – even necessary – for businesses and non-profits. Hence, all the bullshit. However, it is only a part of the plan. Social Media is the tail, not the dog. MORE >> -
SMTHREE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2011 Is Social Media becoming an oxymoron? I subscribe to a ton of blogs on Social Media. It is a blog post from Richard MacManus which you can read here. It takes me several visits and loads of time to clear my Google reader every day. As a result, I’m a headline scanner. Grab me or lose me. This one grabbed me: Why Color May Be The Next Twitter. will admit that I do not use this new “ Color app. However, there were two points raised in this post that kind of startled me. Proximity – It seems this new app works best when you are physically close to other people. Whatever happened to eye contact? MORE >> -
SMTHREE | FRIDAY, MAY 27, 2011 Social Media: The pros and cons of a content calendar Seems you can’t find a blog or an advice column that doesn’t stress the importance of content in your social media strategy. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Content is King. Even though this has become a cliché the underlying truth is undeniable. So, how do you generate, create and post this regal content? One technique that has been making the rounds is the content calendar. The concept is simple enough – pick a theme for each day and focus your content around that idea. As I wrote about here , it is a great way to organize your thinking process. MORE >> -
