The Huffington Post offers badges for connecting with other users, moderating comments and other useful behaviors. But I think it’s worth it. Community building.

I’m especially excited how Manor, Texas is using QR codes to promote government communication. bought several eye-catching customized conference badges for $2.50 a piece. Hold your smartphone up to this image and, if you have Google Goggles or another barcode-reading application active, you can scan this and be shown information about me. I see QR codes everywhere these days, from newspaper classified advertisements to restaurant menus to retail storefront doors.

You can earn points and unlock badges as you discover new things. There is a competitive edge to it (the more you check in at locations, the more points and badges you win – there’s even a leaderboard), however I believe the true value is in the word of mouth opportunities they offer. Foursquare is the clear favourite for me so I will focus more on that here. For me they bridge the gap between the online and offline world, something key in connecting brands with consumers and something that’s missing in current social media marketing activities. Well done so far.
