Leaving the default avatar in place is the kiss of death in terms of getting people to follow you. It can be something simple like “Excited to meet and connect with other architects on Twitter&# or “Have heard so much about integrating Twitter into my marketing plan, just have to give it a try.&#

All the other sites I network in are usually done under another persona, but I am a very good friend to have and very supportive of my friends even though I don’t know anything about most of them beyond the avatar. (My My ‘offline’ friends think I’m absolutely nuts for all the digging and stumbling I do.)

Using your analogy of a party, eventually you would meet someone (a stranger or probably someone you barely knew). Even though we're all just the text of our name or a simple avatar/pic to each other, we're all real people inside. It is definitely nice to meet new friends on a blog site.
