For several years, I’ve been using Reader Avatars (also called Reader Profiles or Personas) on my blogs – and I’ve found them very effective and helpful. To create your first reader avatar, you’ll need to spend some time thinking and writing about a type of reader that you’re either attempting to reach or who is already reading your blog.

We read to make us feel good, about what we’ve done or what we could do or what others have done — even about what a smart person we look like reading such a smart book on the subway — and not as an exercise in personal growth. When you’re done, give the book away, so someone else can learn from it. Make a list.

But then again, I never expected the little website I created to keep friends and family informed about Jerry’s progress to become the largest online community for canine amputees and their people either. The network creates community. Forums create discussion.

When I started Digital Photography School I created avatars to represent the different types of people I’d be writing for. Sounds a bit like an avatar, doesn’t it?). I’m going to get a book deal. It pretty much destroyed the community I’d created. Build community. But don’t stop there. Create content. Find readers.

It can be quite overwhelming, and sets you up for the comparison game and ‘perfection paralysis’ – not wanting to hit publish until your blog looks perfect. Digg is a “citizen editor&# site – you find (not write) a cool article, bookmark it on the site and the community votes for it to go on the front page. Ok, lets go into the background of why this shift is important with regards to how influencers are effective in online communities. Watch out Twitterati! Context is King.
