Using weblog for organising my thinking resources fits well my preferences for web-based applications in general, since I use multiple computers and I’m very likely to be online while working. From another, it is essentially a set of webpages connected by links, with permalinks, metadata and underlying standards.

PLEs are meant to simplify managing these artefacts, creating meaning through aggregation, linking and metadata tagging (eg comments, keywords). A PLE could alleviate the daily problem of login identification by storing and safeguarding the data for automatic application. services like social bookmarking or photo sharing.

If you want, you can use any of iTunes music metadata fields, like Artist, Album, Genre and year to slice and dice your PDFs, but to me thats taking the "shoving a square PDF file into a circular music file slot" too far. A similar application to PaperPort is previously-mentioned, free DocsVault. Convenient.
