Approaching Strangers Through Foursquare

Ari Herzog

Geolocation applications allow you to share your location with other people and associate that location to restaurants, events, and other real-world venues. This privacy intrusion is why I deleted my Foursquare account two years ago. But I returned to the Foursquare community last winter and now share my check-ins on a daily basis. 3400% Foursquare Growth Not Notable

Ari Herzog

It’s all and well that Foursquare membership grew 3400% in 2010 but if people aren’t using the location-based service at venues where thousands of people converge, how notable is that statistic? If you can read this sentence, add a comment below if you are one of the 6 million Foursquare users who actively uses the service to check-in to locations. Media Foursquare

Why I Deleted My Foursquare Account

racked my brain, trying to figure out who I knew named “Brian”. “I saw that you checked in there on Foursquare, Shea,” he said. My heart started to race. I’ve read articles about burglaries and stalking thanks to Foursquare, but because I only occasionally link my check-ins with tweets, I figured I was being responsible. You probably shouldn’t be telling people where you are on Foursquare, should you, Shea?” he said. Guess Who is Back on Foursquare

Ari Herzog

Citing privacy concerns and not wanting strangers to know where I was every moment I checked in to a location, I deleted my Foursquare account 14 months ago. Recalling the ensuing storm of comments my action caused in the fall of 2010, it was evident some people were passionate I made the right decision and others felt I should give the location-based application a second chance. Forrester Research recently surveyed 37,000 mobile users and in its report issued this month, a mere 2% of those users had Foursquare accounts. Why I Deleted My Foursquare Account.

Can Ads Actually Make Foursquare Better

In this edition of The Baer Facts, I talk with  Kyle Lacy  of  ExactTarget  about the newly launched Foursquare ads , and whether they are a viable option for marketers, an annoyance for users, both or neither. Now, I’m not suggesting Foursquare will ever approach Twitter’s level of ubiquity, much less Facebook’s. Because Foursquare makes very little sense unless you’re in a physical location like a store, restaurant, etc. But, if you are a business with a physical location (or you have clients that fit that bill) you need to pay attention to how Foursquare and geo-location can help you – and it can. The Next Big Thing After Twitter! Is FourSquare The Answer?

Atom Thought

I was beginning to hear a lot about Foursquare in the past few months , actually more after I bought the   iPhone3G, and in the past few days decided to explore and experience Foursquare myself. However Foursquare takes it to the next level intelligently by using the entire concept as if it were a video game. Augmented Reality Applications Will Start to Go Mainstream. Most AR applications in 2009 were quaint curiosities designed to demonstrate the AR concept. It took a lot of hacking and ingenuity to make these a reality since most consumer platforms lagged (but not by much) in features (think video finally coming to the iPhone) required for AR. A few AR applications have been rolled out by progressive marketers and other organizations this year, but 2010 will be the year AR explodes. Some of the most interesting applications will be outside of marketing and promotion.
