To my knowledge, TechCrunch became the first ever blog to reach 1 million subscribers – something they proudly displayed via their Feedburner chicklet. An Apple event that could normally be covered in one or two blog posts will be turned into five or ten, purely for pageviews. More recently, TechCrunch was sold to AOL for $25m.

With over 4 million RSS subscribers according to Feedburner, it’s clear they’re not struggling. My audience has grown steadily with virtually no marketing, and I have no niche to compete with. Mashable is good, although sometimes very biased (Apple) and not really comparing the brands they need to compare.
