Twitter reveals how its recommendation algorithm works

April 3, 2023

Back in mid-March, Elon Musk promised to release Twitter’s source code for its recommendation algorithm — and now, he’s delivered on that and more.

In addition to sharing its code on GitHub, Twitter has also published a short note on why the team has released the data, with more detail on how the algorithm works shared on the platform’s engineering blog.

According to Twitter, the recommendation algorithms work by attempting to “answer important questions…such as, ‘What is the probability you will interact with another user in the future?’ or, ‘What are the communities on Twitter and what are trending Tweets within them?’”

Twitter uses the information it extracts from tweet, user, and engagement data to source tweets, rank them, and filter out content you’re less likely to enjoy.

“Okay,” you’re thinking, “I kind of assumed that. But how does it actually work?” Buckle up — we’re going to get into it.

Twitter (finally) adds Edit Tweet feature

September 14, 2022

On September 1st, 2022 Twitter began rolling out its most anticipated and requested feature: Edit Tweet. The feature is currently only available for internal testing but Twitter Blue subscribers in specific regions will get the first opportunity to test it publicly. Twitter intended to monitor user behavior before finalizing the feature for a full public rollout.

Update: On October 3rd, 2022 Twitter announced that, after successful testing, Edit Tweet is being rolled out to Twitter Blue subscribers in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. A US rollout is coming soon.

Edit Tweet lets users do exactly that, but not without some limits:

  • Edits can only be made within 30 minutes from the time of posting
  • Tweets can only be edited 5 times in that 30-minute window

The idea is to provide enough time to fix typos, add missing media files, and include hashtags that might have been missed.

Twitter testing Product Drops reminder feature

June 9, 2022

Twitter is introducing a new shopping feature that will help marketers keep audiences up to date on product launches.

With Product Drops, users will be able to tap a “Remind me” button whenever a merchant tweets about an upcoming launch. The button can be found at the bottom of the Tweet.

If users want to learn more about the product, they can click on the merchant’s Tweet, which will take them directly to a Product Details Page. This page will show the price, photos, and a product description as well as a clickable hashtag that will let users look up what other shoppers on the platform have to say about the product.
