What are the best free tools for analyzing a Twitter profile? During a social media audit I like to run a company’s Twitter profiles through some basic analysis tools to set benchmarks and compare them to competitors. I got good response to my post on Facebook analytics tools so I thought I’d do something similar for Twitter.

The Pew Research Center’s The State of the News Media 2012 is out and the section on What Facebook and Twitter Mean for News makes for an interesting read. The figures on where users get their news links from is already being covered as a sign that Facebook and Twitter may not be as strong of a news source as previously thought.

It aggregates press releases from 10 wire services and distribution services and pulls them in directly from 60+ technology and media companies. A Look at Muck Rack’s Twitter Press Release Service, 51 Releases Later. Press release search engine PRFilter came out of beta last week. It seems to work fairly well.

Bing has stronger relationships with Facebook and Twitter so it is in a better position to utilize their data. Beyond personalized search results the engines are also looking at social activity in aggregate to help evaluate the popularity or relative importance of content and the authority of both sites and authors.
