Here’s what we expect (hope) to see from the social news giant: Nothing else will have any meaning if Digg doesn’t turn a profit by the middle of the year. If there’s one reason Digg brought in Matt Williams as CEO, it was his understanding of profitability and advertising development. Digg is heading in the right direction with 2 additions from 2011. Larger sites like Mashable don’t even have Digg buttons on their stories anymore. | SOSHABLE MARCH 19, 2011 Three Things Digg Needs to Survive: Buzz, Buzz, and Buzz No, Digg is not dead. As I posted on FastCompany last month, Digg has until May to get the help (which we’ve offered on multiple occasions free of charge) they need to get back on track or they will miss their last window of opportunity to keep from going the way of Propeller, MySpace, and Yahoo Buzz. That helped to prompt the recent round of Digg-hate from the blogosphere. | | | | | | | SOSHABLE AUGUST 10, 2012 Digg Traffic Falls out of Top 200 on Alexa, Heading Out of Top 400 Most believed that when Betaworks bought Digg last month and announced plans to revamp the site completely, that they were getting a recognized domain and a good amount of traffic to go with it. Despite Digg’s fall over the last 3 years, it has always hovered on Alexa’s traffic rank between 120 and 190 worldwide. Digg Featured Social News Betaworks | NOWSOURCING JULY 13, 2012 RIP Digg: Enter the New Social Media Frontier If you were a top Digg user, you had clout (not klout, that’s for newbies, stick with me here) in the newly emerging Web 2.0 Digg, the once frontrunner of the pack, started mindlessly catering to the publishers only. Sites need to understand that sure, you can build a great aggregator, but you still need to rely on the sharp eyes of human curators. Early Times. world. | WWW.NIEMANLAB.ORG SEPTEMBER 22, 2010 What’s the law around aggregating news online ABOUT ARCHIVES CONTACT SUBSCRIBE TWITTER What’s the law around aggregating news online? So much of the web is built around aggregation — gathering together interesting and useful things from around the Internet and presenting them in new ways to an audience. This should be required reading for anyone interested in where aggregation and linking are headed. 8 / 10:30 a.m. | IDACONCPTS MAY 4, 2011 Why Reddit Continues to be Relevant According to Digg’s top brass, these changes were meant to bring in more revenue to the site, giving corporations and companies more control over content and more exposure for their own content. However, this went against what many people felt was the point of Digg: allowing anyone to potentially make the front page of the site. The Problem with Digg. Reddit. An Example. | | | | | | | | | -
WEBBIQUITY SMM | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2010 Content Aggregation: The Future of (B2B and Consumer) Media? Instead, successful media will become aggregators and editors of content, rather than creators. Online content aggregation is as old as the Internet itself, beginning with AOL. Technology to “scrape websites and republish content (legally or not) has also been around for some time, but until recently, doing content aggregation well required either a massive investment in infrastructure (like Moreover ) or a unworkable level of manual effort. New tools, however, are bringing sophisticated content aggregation and curation within reach of midsized enterprises. MORE >> -
SOSHABLE | WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2011 Digg Experiments with Embedded Image Posts In an effort to improve “shareability and make the site more sticky, Digg is experimenting with embedded images on the Digg submission permalinks. For months, Digg has had (off and on at times) inline videos that could be played directly from the Digg post page for certain video sites like YouTube and Break. Last night, Digg started rolling out embedded images as well. Digg has always been an aggregator of content rather than a place where people can see the actual pieces. Despite the upcoming complaints, this is a great move for Digg. MORE >> -
