You can also use keyword and reputation monitoring tools, real-time search tools and popular/meme lists for articles, tweets, social media submissions, etc. Here are some free resources for identifying hot topics and search trends.

Most people who use RSS readers do so with the intent of subscribing to an aggregated river of news feeds, persistent searches and blogs. This philosophy is key - Google Reader = news aggregator + custom feed database. I also cant see any real advantage over delicious (except for not having to remember where all the dots go).

Really Simple Syndication. If you’re utilizing Delicious and StumbleUpon correctly, both later in this article, all the important stuff will come back to you. Delicious’ killer app is its ability to facilitate sharing. So far I use only Google Reader (GR)and delicious, and pretty much do what you say.
