For the past 6 years, every time the holidays rolls around, a new tradition has come upon me; an outpouring of emails and Facebook messages asking me if I know that my picture comes up on Google for ugly Christmas sweater. Or that my picture was used on a flyer for an Ugly Christmas Sweater party. But this day was different.

Sure, moving the family from everything we knew to practically the farthest point away we could go in the US was a tough pill to swallow, but I was getting the opportunity to not only work for one of the best companies in the world, but continue to work with digital marketing and be a part of the startup that has now become Microsoft Advertising.

I also have to believe that there would be value to advertisers in a “true” list to be able to gauge advertising opportunities on blogs. Share this on Facebook. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time at Microsoft Advertising on the community team. MA has established themselves as a leader in brands using social, and I was lucky enough to be a part of that team in the early stages as social media tools like Facebook and Twitter began to take off.

If I were a local business, I would immediately partner with these companies and get an offer on the table, and window decals advertising the fact. However as businesses have started to offer rewards to users who check-in, that likelihood changes dramatically. Embrace user feedback and good things will happen.
