I discovered AdSense (Google’s advertising network), and started putting their ads on my blog. Amazon was just a bookstore back then, and I was earning 4–5% commissions on $10 books. This time Yahoo! had an advertising network, and I started putting their ads on my blog, along with some from Chitika.

How I Diversified My Blogging Income Beyond Having All My Eggs in the AdSense Basket

Other Ad Networks. My first experiment was to try to find another advertising network that might work like AdSense. I tried a few (Yahoo had one at the time, for example) but none really converted as well as AdSense for me until I found Chitika (aft). This book is now in its third edition. Chitika blew my mind.

The Way of the Web

It would be interesting to compare with book sales to see if the desire for more in-depth information is holding strong, but the last figures I can find are from January 2010, with a drop of almost 7% for print books in 2009. Meanwhile ebooks have overtaken hardbacks on Amazon US.
