I started 2014 with a mission to use social networks without rules. People follow my feed there and like/comment when inspired. When 2014 began, I needed to embrace chaos to find social networking order. On Facebook and LinkedIn, I wrote that I needed a pre-existing relationship to connect. Ditto me on their photos.

Because I started looking at lists in a different light in 2014 than in the past, it’s now irrelevant to me how many I follow. I continue to look at my lists before I look at the bigger feed of news and updates from everyone. These screenshots portray several correlations that led me to change my tweeting habits.

That’s the same date I blogged my social networking primer for 2014. This is unfollowing so all of their wall updates now appear on lists and not selected algorithmic updates on my news feed. My news feed now only shows those people who call or text me on a regular basis. This is not unfriending.

It was very hard for me to engage with anyone since my feed was full of people I didn’t know. This sparked me to update a 2014 article I wrote for The Huffington Post into the above. For the first five years I tweeted, I didn’t use lists — which meant it was basically a 1-way outgoing conversation. I edited the rest.
