Since I like looking at the social media presence of NBA teams I thought I’d run the 2011 playoff teams through the beta version of the new Klout to see how the fare against each other. Atlanta had the worst Klout score in the conference so that doesn’t sync with their surprising performance thus far in the playoffs.

Director of Sales for @ klout. Though fairly new to Twitter, Amber is active and highly engaging, and her following is likely to grow quickly.

After a brief absence (December and January) the Ottawa Twitter top 20 makes its return. I started doing these tables over a year ago to illustrate how being popular (Grader) on Twitter doesn’t necessarily mean you have influence (TweetLevel). Perhaps people are just getting better at using Twitter to build influence?

So this year I thought I’d do a similar competition by comparing the official Twitter profiles of both teams. The figures referenced below are accurate as of February 2, 2011. Which team is making the most impact on Twitter? 4th Quarter: Klout. Which team is more influential on Twitter? 1st Quarter: Most Followers.

This screenshot, courtesy of TwitterCounter , shows a 3-month tally of my Twitter followers. Next is an account for Formulists, a Twitter application that went out of business two years ago. Not on Twitter, anyway. But classes have been in full swing since and their Twitter account just sits vacant. That is no accident.

Does anyone else think its interesting that Twitter, the hottest social media network today, is generating events? Prediction: tomorrow’s event, event marketing and sponsorship opportunity is with “Tweet-ups” where like-minded Twitter-peeps meet up to meet each other in person. Everyone is doing it. Social media has reached the masses.
