Yesterday, I went to bookmark something at the site and I got a message saying Mixx had been purchased by UberMedia , which I found interesting because the rumor is that the company could soon be launching a Twitter competitive site. Mixx is popular, but it’s not as popular as, say, StumbleUpon, Digg, Facebook, or Twitter.

If 37,447,814 YouTube views of the above cat video since December 2006 are any indication, people like to watch funny cats. It’s a mildly interactive site — but it’s clear to me the people visiting have a clear grasp on how to share what they like with their friends. Sounds impressive. Web-savvy users.

True, there are guidelines as to what works well (being sincere, helpful and knowledgeable) and what doesn’t (trying to use social media sites as one-way broadcasts of your marketing brochures), but the field is new enough that many of the “rules&# are still being written.
