In the early part of my career I was fortunate to land a job on the corporate marketing team at Google. But there is at least one element of the early Google culture worthy of discussion as it relates to social media. Those in the Bay Area may remember it well, a cryptic billboard in 2004 along the 101 freeway: That’s it.

Given the high standards Google set for itself with the aims of indexing the world’s information, and the mantra of ‘Don’t Be Evil’, it’s likely we hold it to higher standards than most companies. After all, if you’re paying $150,000 for Google Analytics Premium, you’d be expecting all information.

Internet IPO since Google back in 2004. It's even harder to imagine when our media is filled with brands like Facebook , Twitter and Zynga (all of which get much more media attention than LinkedIn, and all of which are still not public companies) and we've rarely heard much public excitement about LinkedIn and their growth.

It’s hard to explain passion for Twitter or a love of a blog. Google doesn’t forget! Facebook’s intended purpose when created by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 was for connecting college students with each other in their respective universities. My 3rd hour – not so much. Mafia Wars? Colossal time suck.
