Back in, I think it must have been 2004, I’ve been blogging for a couple of years by this point, and for the first year I didn’t even know you could make money from your blog. I hadn’t made any money and then the second year, I started to dabble with some Google AdSense ads on my blog, some Amazon affiliate income.

Back in 2004, when I’d been blogging for about 18 months, I started experimenting with AdSense and Amazon’s affiliate program. However, using a tool called Site Meter I could view the stats of both my own blog and other people’s. I did something similar with my income, which at the time was largely from AdSense.

Tools like semrush and buzzsumo can help you a lot. Semrush is the perfect tool for competitor analysis. Tools may show that long tail keywords have low search volumes but what is more important, especially at the beginning, is to achieve top rankings for some of the keywords (even if their traffic is very low).

Today I’m going to make some suggestions on how to set those goals based on how I did it back in 2004 when I began to monetize my blog. In 2004, I started to experiment with AdSense ads and Amazon’s Affiliate program. A lot of bloggers were using a tool called Site Meter back then to measure traffic.

On ProBlogger we have been focusing on affiliate income from some of the tools we use. AdSense – dPA has a large amount of traffic, so it pays to use AdSense along with other income streams. Recommended Blogging Resources & Tools. Our third income stream, third highest income stream is AdSense.
