“K” is King in Brand and Company Naming

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Donna Vincent Roa. The power of the letter “K” has always fascinated me. In college, one of my favorite adjectives was “kafkaesque,” a word with three “K” sounds. The first time I heard this word, it resonated with me, and I wanted to say it again and again. There was something special about it. “K” is the 11 th letter in the alphabet and one of the least frequently used letters, but is believed to make people laugh and feel good.

How Bees Make Me a Better Business Owner

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Ken Mueller. A bee in my bonnet. Often when my wife and I are taking our dog, Shadow, for a walk, we go past a house in our neighborhood that has grabbed my attention. There are two vehicles parked out front bearing license plates that include variations on the word “beeswax.” The front yard of the house is decorated with a variety of ornamental beehives and other bee-themed items.

I Want to Thank the Academy… a Language Rant

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Mary Barber. “I want to thank you for being here today …” “I would like to ask you to do this for me …” I don’t know about you, but people wanting to thank me/do things for me are starting to make me cringe. I feel the same about those who say they “would like to” do things. Think about it and I’m sure it will bother you as well.

Why a Social Credit Score is an Empty and Dangerous Notion

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Pierre-Loic Assayag. I’m being challenged to a battle of egos by a stranger on Twitter: “@pierreloic your Klout Score is 33 (I’m a 51). Check out your @klout profile today.”. Of course, I could always ask Shonali to the rescue. She’s after all “a 63″ and the Klout resident expert on all things bacon and Kim Kardashian.

It’s a Book: How Give to the Max Day Could Help Kids Read

Waxing UnLyrical

I love how, when used well, social media can build powerful communities to effect real change and real results. To me, this can be much more impactful when it comes to reaching our end-objectives (which is what we should begin with when we embark on public relations , right?) than, say, focusing on reaching traditional media first, and social second.

You Are The Company You Keep

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Nancy Davis. “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.”. That is a very apt way of saying that we often hang out with people who are like us. Like attracts like. Who we choose to spend time with says a lot about who we are as people and what we value. If I looked at the blogs in your Reader, would I be surprised? I choose to be around people who add to my life and inspire me to be better.

Are You a Digital Landowner or Sharecropper?

Waxing UnLyrical

Guest post by Cal Evans. Social networks are great for business. They allow you to connect with a wide audience and interact with them in ways that websites don’t always allow. Brands from Coca-Cola down to local bakeries are using them to interact with their customers. It is understandable, then, why business owners are flocking to set up shop on social networks and sometimes forgoing the building their own websites in favor of a social network presence.
