Not that oppression and bondage and brick-shaping is particularly funny. But after years of arid ceremonies and pasty matzoh balls and the same old same old, I struck out with my own Passover haggadah, which I called the Ha-Haggadah. My Ha-Haggadah has evolved each year with timely updates and references. | THE SOCIAL MEDIUM OCTOBER 27, 2011 Twitter Followers: Finding Good Relationship Material Once you begin embracing Twitter, every day can be a Christmas of sorts, when you open up your e-mail to notifications of several new overnight followers. However well-developed your self esteem, a new crop of names and faces interested in what you have to microblog about definitely gives you a little tingle. But then — as quickly as Christmas passes, the needles fall off the tree. | | | | | | | THE SOCIAL MEDIUM JUNE 21, 2012 Social Media: Welcome to the Party Recently, my friend Gary admitted to feeling a bit antisocial — a little disconnected, behind the times. What he needed, I told him, was a chance to get to know the popular players. As luck would have it, my perky friend Eventbrite was throwing a party that very Friday night. So I brought him along. You made it! You rock!” Eventbrite cheered, her bright orange hair glowing in the doorway. | THE SOCIAL MEDIUM JULY 13, 2012 The New Chivalry In more genteel times — that is, before restaurants were dotted with people talking and texting on their cell phones — refined men carried handkerchiefs. As the name implies, they were certainly handy, especially before the pocket-pack of Kleenex was invented. But beyond the practicality of it, they enabled a gallant gesture, held out to a woman to dab her brow or wipe her tears. | THE SOCIAL MEDIUM OCTOBER 12, 2011 Oh, the Humanity! I guess it’s not odd that the standout, game-changing speaker at last week’s Hartford Business Journal / CVC-PRSA Social Media Summit would make an indirect reference to a Seinfeldism. His key message was simple: Build your brand by humanizing your social media strategy. You can get 25% more fans, he says, with a human avatar, he says, than a business logo. | THE SOCIAL MEDIUM NOVEMBER 8, 2011 The True Work of Engagement In her novel “Devotion,” Dani Shapiro writes, “The questioning is the true work of engagement.” Granted, she’s working through thoughts sparked in her Torah study group. But her phrase sparked my own examination of the concept of engagement in social media. The social media arena can be a common ground, a proving ground, or a battle ground, powerfully engaging in each scenario. | | | | | | | | | -
THE SOCIAL MEDIUM | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2011 Something to BlogTalk About Mike Youmans, founder of West Hartford, CT-based CollegePrepExpress, LLC — or Dr. Yo, as his students know him — is an engaging tutor and standardized test-prep specialist who has built a substantial blog collection reflecting two decades of teaching. The CPE blog topics range from SAT and ACT study strategies, score reporting and vocabulary-building tools to mindfulness-based test-anxiety reduction and interview tips. THE SOCIAL MEDIUM | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2011 Defining Your Social Media Bullseye This is the time of year when you hear friends say things like, “I’m resolving to be healthier,” as they down that third eggnog, or “I’m going to be more careful with my money,” while swiping a credit card for a sweet flat-screen TV. Does “healthy” mean getting a lot of people to “like” eggnog? Does better money management translate to everyone coming to your house to watch the big game on your new TV? Even with the best intentions, pursuing vague resolutions is like trying to hit a target with a quiver of dull arrows and no clear bullseye. Increase awareness of a cause or initiative. MORE >> -
THE SOCIAL MEDIUM | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2012 Pinterest: Beyond the Brownies Good writers know the power of the “show, don’t tell” rule for capturing an audience’s interest and imagination. Pinterest, the “Oooo, something shiny!” ” of social media, nails it, so to speak, proving that a picture is worth a thousand hours of otherwise productive time. According to Ragan.com , we are stuck on Pinterest for the pretty pictures, the minimal text, and its quick, easy, anonymous access to the objects of our desire. It’s “i-candy” for voyeuristic hoarders. Yeah, I’m talking to you. Was this Pinterest? MORE >> -

The couple dozen of us represented a nice cross-section of professional disciplines and graduating classes from the last few decades. new media professor spoke to the group, and during Q&A, one of the more distinguished alumni raised his hand. “I don’t go online much, and I stay off Facebook. Why should I put my personal information out there? don’t need strangers reading all about my life.” ” Yet here you are, reading his comments in a blog. KRFMHVRZEP3X. MORE >> -
THE SOCIAL MEDIUM | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2012 Going Social with the Grammys I watched the Grammys this year, which was notable because 1) I don’t usually watch the Grammys and 2) I was simultaneously texting, 3) Facebooking, and 4) tweeting the Grammys. It doesn’t paint a very pretty picture, does it. Let Let me reassure you, I was not ALSO driving, doing my makeup, and eating a sandwich. Now THAT would be extreme.). Yes, I had my multitasking on, but I certainly wasn’t alone. And I didn’t have to buy pizza for any of them! It’s odd, I thought, all the apps and electronics that now enhance our viewing experience. And Still, we love you.) MORE >> -
