The person ask if s/he should send a public thanks, send a private direct message, or simply do nothing. It’s actually a good question to ask and it illustrates the concept that there are social rules that influence how people use social media. My own response is that a person should just send a direct message. It’s a private response to the person, so it doesn’t show up on everyone’s twitter feed. don’t think thanking people publicly really engages them beyond the thanks. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY JUNE 15, 2012 What makes a customer experience Customers want experience more than they want service. Customer service is rolled out to solve problems and make customer complaints go away. Customer experience is performed so you never have a problem, and what you get are advocates that rave about your business because they can’t tell enough people how much you have helped them. So how do you create a customer experience? | | | | | | | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY AUGUST 3, 2011 Social Narcissism I came across a recent article on why Klout is dangerous and it reminded me of the posts I wrote in 2009 about Klout’s danger as a form of social narcissism. In that post, I explained that Klout allows people to post their social influence score on twitter, basically allowing them to brag about how much social influence they have. It struck me then and now as a form of social narcissism, or bragging, mainly useful for trying to impress your social media followers. In some cases, it will be because of fame, but such fame is misleading. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY SEPTEMBER 26, 2012 The difference between Optimism and Positive Thinking There is a category of business books that I’d say focuses on how you think about business more than on how you run business. Think and Grow Rich, The Magic of Thinking Big, and Rich Dad, Poor Dad are examples of these kinds of books. They show business owners how to think positively, which is a skill in and of itself. However its important not to confuse positive thinking and optimism. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 Intelligence and Business In the Magic of Thinking Big , the author points that intelligence isn’t all its cracked up to be and that it doesn’t matter how intelligent you are. What matters is how you use your intelligence. agree with him. Intelligence isn’t all its cracked up to be. I’ve even been one of those people. never found it easy to relate to other people. Then there’s street smarts. | IMAGINE YOUR REALITY NOVEMBER 22, 2010 Why information sharing isn’t social I see a lot of people get on Twitter and other social networking sites and just post tweet after tweet of information. Nothing else. And worse they cross post it to every social media account, without really considering the relevance of the writing or the fact that they are posting to other people. In fact, I think that a lot of people never consider the social aspect of social media, treating it more as an information posting platform and less as a medium where actual conversations occur. What creates a relationship on social media is interaction and conversation. | | | | | | | | | -
IMAGINE YOUR REALITY | FRIDAY, MAY 27, 2011 All that authenticity There’s a lot of buzz going on about transparency and authenticity and whether or not these concepts apply to social media. The two words have become buzz words in the social media marketing word, but nonetheless they are important words to consider, provided you also consider the actions that accompany them. It’s all fine and well to throw buzz words around, but when we look at authenticity and transparency and the actions involved in displaying such concepts, it’s not so simple. What does it mean to be authentic and/or transparent? How much information do we provide? MORE >> -
IMAGINE YOUR REALITY | TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2011 Social impressions and links Whenever I see someone post a link to an article or a blog entry or something else, I wince when it looks like it’s automated. The reason I wince is because the social impression it creates or rather lack of a social impression. Ideally you want someone to click on your link and go to your website, blog, or wherever else, but if there is no motivating reason to do so the link becomes useless, and also acts as a strike against your social presence on social media. People want social engagement and this includes engagement as it pertains to your links. MORE >> -
IMAGINE YOUR REALITY | MONDAY, JULY 30, 2012 What are you willing to trade off? The other day I had a chat with a friend and he pointed out that there’s a trade off when you choose to do things your way versus doing it the way someone else does it. He astutely pointed out that what you’re really doing, when you go your own way is claiming the life you want to live and business you want to own, whereas when you do something the way someone else does it, you are choosing to model at least part of your life on how that person lives his/her life. It’s a good point and one that is sometimes missed in the rush to be successful at business. MORE >> -
IMAGINE YOUR REALITY | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 Action Cures Fear I’m reading The Magic of Thinking Big and one phrase really stood out to me: Action cures fear. In thinking it over, I found myself agreeing with that statement. Fear, as an emotion, tends to cause indecision, even causing a person to freeze. When I feel fear, it holds me up. I’m not as quick to do something, because I’m too busy thinking of all the what-if scenarios.Fear causes a person to postpone action and second guess their thinking. Action cures fear because once you act, you don’t have time to focus on your fears. Do that task. Take action! Our actions define us. MORE >> -
IMAGINE YOUR REALITY | MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2010 Facebook spam Lately I’ve been getting Facebook messages from people I don’t know about random subjects that I have no interest in. It’s basically spam and I’ve marked it as such. But it highlights how a social networking site can quickly become more than just social networking. Now it’s becoming another site where I can get spammed by people who I don’t even know. One of the issues that arises in any communication system is how people will use that communication as a way to catch other people’s interest and get them to their website or product. MORE >> -
