Why Social Media Does Not Bring Us Closer

Ari Herzog

It is a fallacy to suggest social media brings us closer. Take Facebook. It is silly to think that just because 500 million people have Facebook accounts and you befriend everyone in your life that you’re any closer to them on Facebook than off. Unless you can stand in a room surrounded by your 100, 600, or 2000 friends and one by one tell everyone what everyone else is doing in their lives, you fail as their friend.

And a New Blog Design is Up

Ari Herzog

I’m a big fan of the DIY ethic but I also recognize I can’t do everything myself. Inspired by Danny Brown’s launch of his blog design, I figured there was no better time than the present (err, past) to change the look of things around here, too. After searching for a WordPress designer who is adept in customizing CSS and PHP code for the Thesis theme , I stumbled onto Steve.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat

For the better part of a year, a black REPLY button has existed underneath every comment. Scrolling through the archive it is clear that few people take advantage of clicking it and replying to others. It is also clear that when someone (me, a guest author, anyone) replies to your comment, you rarely return to add a follow-up comment. You may not be aware of the reply.

Categorizing Blogs with ISSNs: Yes or No?

Ari Herzog

If you visit any library in the world tomorrow and ask to see the detailed record for International Standard Serial Number 0099-9660, the librarian will print you the database information for The Wall Street Journal. Ask for ISSN 0882-0325 and you get Russian newspaper Pravda. Ask for ISSN 0032-1478 and you’ll see Playboy. Any periodical can request an ISSN from their national registrar.

Hoping We Act More Cellularly Responsible

Ari Herzog

The April 26, 2004 issue of New York magazine contains an article about our emotional attachment to mobile devices. Reading it, I chuckled and wondered why we haven’t changed our behaviors. It’s pathetic that I use my cellphone to call business partners, dates, and other people for the specific reason that I am either running late or having trouble finding a parking space.
